Some engineers reasonably argue that browser-based CAD systems (on the cloud) cannot compete against desktop systems. But is that actually true? Traditional desktop CAD systems typically require serious CPU and GPU. Installs are large and upgrades are non-trivial.
Browser-based CAD systems have been on the rise, especially for small project requirements. Since the entire CAD application is running inside a browser, there is no install needed and upgrades happen automatically on the cloud. Also, the user can use these CAD systems on multiple platforms and devices if they have access to a standard browser—from any location.
3DCreator from Dassault Systèmes <span data-cmtooltip='Visit Solidworks‘ class=”glossaryLink”>SOLIDWORKS is one such CAD system that runs in a browser. Is the gap closing between what is possible on a desktop versus in a browser?
This is an anatomically accurate human male created from full-body MRI scans provided to <span data-cmtooltip='Visit Solidworks‘ class=”glossaryLink”>SOLIDWORKS by partner Zygote, which maintains one of the world’s most comprehensive libraries of accurate 3D anatomy and biomedical models. This model is extremely dense (17 million polygons).
Here I am suppressing the muscles and some of the organs like lungs, intestines, liver, pancreas, and more.
3D Creator, running in a browser, enabled me to perform all my modifications (reassembly, adding structure, and more) without a hitch.
Below are some screenshots from 3D Creator of the various systems in a human body.
Traditionally, people think of 3D CAD as a massive desktop system and a huge graphics card. Browser-based CAD has come a long way toward performing complex modeling. And, going forward, you may see the power closing between desktop and browser-based systems.
The 3DEXPERIENCE platform also has collaboration and data management tools built-in, so working with colleagues both inside and outside of engineering—and even customers and suppliers—is fast and easy.
High-end CAD on the cloud? 3D Creator already packs an impressive punch.
